The Chocolate Hills are Bohol’s most renowned geological wonder and the cornerstone of the province’s official designation as the Philippines' first UNESCO Global Geopark. Spanning an area of more than 50 square kilometers across the municipalities of Carmen, Batuan, and Sagbayan, this vast terrain consists of at least 1,260 to upwards of 1,776 near-symmetrical conical karst limestone mounds.
During the dry summer months (late February through May), the coarse cogon grass covering the rolling limestone hills parches under the tropical sun, turning a rich cocoa brown—giving rise to their iconic name.

The primary and highest official observation platform. Features an elevated pavilion offering an unobstructed 360-degree vista of hundreds of hills undulating into the horizon. Best photographed during early morning golden hour (06:00 – 07:30 AM) when morning mist settles into the limestone valleys.
2. Chocolate Hills ATV & Buggy Trails (Carmen & Batuan)
For an adrenaline-pumping perspective, rent an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or 2-seater buggy at the base of the hills in Carmen. Guided trail rides wind through muddy off-road tracks, traditional Visayan rice paddies, and bring you directly to the base of towering conical mounds.

How the Chocolate Hills Were Formed
Geologically classified as conical karst terrain, the hills are composed of Pliocene marine limestone rich in fossilized corals and mollusks. Over millions of years, tectonic uplift elevated the ancient seabed above water. Sub-aerial erosion from tropical rainfall and groundwater dissolution systematically sculpted the porous limestone into uniform dome and cone formations.
Best Time to Visit
To witness the true "chocolate" hue, plan your visit during the peak dry season between March and May. During the rainy season (July to November), the hills are blanketed in vibrant emerald green foliage, offering an equally stunning, lush tropical panorama.
